RIWAKA.

The usual monthly' meeting of the Riwaka School Committee was hold in the schoolroom on. Tuesday evening,, when there' were present Messrs S. M. Askew (chairman), Arch. McLean, A.. Duncan, C. P. in-y, G. M. Dock, T. Cook; and W. W. French (lion, secretary). The headmaster at Brooklyn reported 86 names on the roll, and a satisfactory attendance of 83. Correspondence was read from the Education Board notifying that a grant of ■£'2 had been made towards the cost of approach to Brooklyn school gate, and re the visit of H.M.S. New Zealand. A j committee consisting of the chairman, Messrs J. H, Clarke, G. Deck, W. W. French, and the teachers, was appoint-, ed to make arrangements -re the conveyance, etc., of the children to Nelson to visit the battleship. It was \ agreed to write to the Board re the defective windows in the Brooklyn schoolhouso; also to apply for a. new clock for Riwaka school. : It .was resolved to renew the application for; tho. enlargement of the Brooklyn school. \ Two small accounts were -passed for ! payment. Mr Irwin reported that no had received the following promises towards the reclamation scheme at the,j foot of tho playground: £2 (Stoke), j £5 os (Timaru), and £2 2s (Ashbxirton). •«,..": The Riwaka Debating Society opened the season on Friday evening with tho subject, "Is tobacco smoking pre-j judicial "to health." Mr Jennings led j in tho affirmative, and Mr Harvey m the negative. Several new members have joined the society, and a very good session is anticipated. The friends of Mr J. Greensill will regret. to hear of his serious illness. The doctors have ordered his removal to the Nelson' Hospital, whither he was conveyed on Tuesday^ last. Owing to the. indisposition of Mr J. GroGtisill, and his inability in consequence to do the work on his farm, about thirty willing hands turned out last Tuesday and dug a iield of-pota-toes for hftn, about eight tons m all.
