NEWS OF THE DAY.

Owing to the heavy rain yesterday all championship cricket matches set down for to-day have been postponed.

Messrs Fuller, and Sons have secured tho exclusive- rights for Now Zealand of a magnificent fillip which is to bo produced shortly, entitled "Queen Elizabeth." It is the representation of the play of that name performed by Sara Bernhardt at the Bcrnhardt Theater in Paris. Tho film is 3,600 ft in length, and is said to be tho finest of its kind ever produced.

There is on view at Messrs. Wilkins and Field's premises a monster rhubarb leaf with a span of 3 feet 6 inches. The stalk Is 22 inches long, and 8 inches in circumference. This remarkable specimen was grown by Mr. H. Prebbie, of Victoria street, who claims that it is not a freak, but the result of systematic cultivation, and although of such tremendous dimensions the flaveur of this variety of rhubarb is very mild.

At Stratford yesterday Percy W. C. Wilson, recently in the- employ of the Public Works Office, was charged on remand with forging and uttering a voucher by altering it. A further remand for one week was granted. Detective Boddam stating that an audit revealed other defalcations amounting to between £900 and £1000. Bail was allowed in two sureties of £100 each, and accused in £100.

A tennis match, will bo played on the Brook Club'^s courts to-day between that club and Cable Bay. The teams will be six a-side, tho local players being as follows: Walker, Green, Smith, Townsend, Robison and G. Clark. All these are requested to bo on the coiirts at a quarter to two. Courts will be reserved for those who are not taking part in the match, but it is hoped to finish tho singles by 3 o'clock, thus freeing three more courts at that time.
