NELSON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

ANNUAL MEETING

•^ The annual meeting of members of tho Nelson Horticultural Society was held at the. Chamber or Commerce rooms last oveniag. There was a good attendance, and Mr B. H. Molier (the president) occupied the chair.

A number or new members were elected.

The secretary, Mr A. E. Tasker, presented the balance sheet, which showed, a cash credit balance of £ii ios lid.

The President considered that the financial position was very satisfactory. Tho Society was £25 better oil than it was last year.

The report stated, inter aiia, that during the year the usual shows were held and one extra show in connection with the floral fete. The spimg show was a great success, both in regard to the number of exhibits and in public interest. The keen interest displayed by a considerable section of the public encouraged tho committee to hope- that the- Society was achieving the object for which it and kindred societies oxisted, viz.,__th© encouragement of the taking, of a keener interest in horticulture. The*. early summer or rose show was also a success, although not ao wcii patronised, by the public. The judge at this show was Mr F. Cooper, of "Wellington, who expressed the opinion that tlie roses. staged were quite equal to anything, .showii either in the Dominion or Australia. Tho autumn show brought out a good staging of chrysanthemums, but owing to adverse weather conditions dahlias were conspicuous by their absence. The extra show was iield under canvas at Trafalgar Park, tho unanimous opinion beiiig that it was the best show ever held under tho auspices of the Society. The effect of tho decorations arranged by the committee and, workers placed the oxhisriis in ;. natural setting, thus cuhanci::;.; their, beauty.. A notable feati::- :r ; v work, was tlie largel nu:. .>. ..,.,, .'::iui>itors, and tho hope \v:.:. cx;>K;::;od taai with energy and push the Society flight bey made one of the leading societies in New Zealand. Reference was mado to the spte-ndiu exhii.its of pot plants made by amateur horticulturists. Thanks were tendered to tlio* donors of special prizes, the judges, and others who had given their services generously and unstintingly; also to Islr Aiorrick, the head steward, who had rendered yeoman service.

The report and balance sheet was then adopted on the motion of Messrs M. Levy and S. "Vv im'sett.

Wilkie, Bert Tasker, Arthur Tasker, Wimsett, C. Graham, S. Jennens, Blackburn, and "\V. H. Simpson ; lion auditor, Mr G. M. Rout (re-elected); chief steward Mr T. S. Merrick (re-elected) ; schedule committee. Mosdarnes G. Kerr, Levy, S. Wimsctt, Kitcliinß, and Wastney. Messrs Wjgzol], Simpson. Day, Merrick, Blackburn, Bert Tasker, A. E. Tasker, and F. W. Hamilton.

The dates for the* different shows were fixed as follows: Bulb, September nth and 12th; rose, November 21st .-nd 22nd ; sweet ]>o.t, and carnation, JV.nuary 3rd and 4tii ; chrysanthemum, lust Wednesday in April. H was resolved to continue affiliation ivith the Uoy;:l Horticultural, the. Nationr.l Sv,r*.&t Pea. mid^tlio National Chrysanthemum Societies.

After a. brief discussion it was resolved to hold a svioot pea competition for children in connection with tho '■wec't ri.';.. r.how, atid thai; the arrangeno:its b:? left to tho schedule comm'ittoc.

A hearty rote of thanks was accorded 'to the retiring secretary (Mr Arthur Ifisker).

Other matters were discussed, and the mooting closed witii tho customary votes of thanks.
