Auckland, June.26. At to-day's sitting of the Cost of Living Commission Mr Alexander Caughey of Smith and Caughey, drapers, said that so far as New Zealand goods were concerned the profits derivable had decreased. Bettor goods were being sold, the people not being satisfied with the goods that they were content with 10 years ago. Ho did not say this was not good economy as the goods lasted better. The cost of drapery had increased considerably. Witness said the mostimportant cause of the increased cost of living was that civilisation was not content to ljve a simple life*.
