CHESS.
A NEW CLUB FORMED
A. meeting of chess players was held in Mr. G. i'\ Dodds-' room in Hardy street last evening for the purpose of forming a chess crab. Mr. G. H. Glutten was elected1 chairman. He said that several communications had been received from Mr. A. G. Fell 4 secretary of the New Zealand Chess As&ociation. strongly urging the formation of a chess club in Nelson. The policy of the Association had latterly been to hold the annual congress in the smaller towns with the avowed object of encouraging chess in these places. Thispolicy had resulted in vigorous clubs being formed in both Timaru and Napier. Should a chess club be formed Ui Nelson, there was every prospect of theannual1 congress being held in Nelson next Christina®.
Mr. Merrick then proposed: That a chess chxb bo formed, to be called the Nelson Chess Club, Mr Trathen seconded this, and the motion was carried. After -spme discussion, .Mr. Dodds moved • that a' "sub-conunitteo bo appointed to wait on the Institute atithorities and ascertain on what terms the club could be located in^tho.-Institute. They should also make inquiries as to the 'whereabouts of the property of the old club,' and report the result of this interview at a further meeting to be held at Mr Dodds' room at 8 o'clock on Tuesday, Julj 2nd. Messrs Littlejohn, Dodds, and Olutten were appointed to constitute tlie deputation. . . Mr. C. N. Wilkinson was elected secretary of the club. The meeting then adjourned, after a vote of thanks to the chairman,-and to Mr Dodds for convening the meeting.
