The "Wellington-Brindisi despatch of mails of the 17th May, arrived at London on the afternoon of the 22nd inst.

A Rugby football match was p].\yed on the titoko Orphanage grounds en Saturday between the boys of Central School, Nelson, and tile boys from the Orphanage. T|ie Orphanage won by 28 points to 3; 6 tries and two goals horn tries and 2 penalty goals, to one ; ponalty goal. The match wag a good one but the Orphanage boys wero tfce better team, their passing and scrum work being exceptionally good.

It was stated at the meeting of the Education Board yesterday that tbe art students of the Technical School were making a hall stand to be presenced by tho JJoard to tho Nelson Institute for its new building now nearing completion. The Board decided to thank the art students for their gift. The stand is being made from a design by Mr Cockburn, and should be a handsome piece of furnitur© when completed.

It will be remembered that some time ago Mr Thomas Cawthron generously undertook to defray the cost of reerecting tho Church Hill steps in stone. Wo learn that Mr Cawthron--has now accepted the tender of Messrs. J. and A. Wilson, Ltd., for the work. Five tenders were received, that of iho successful tenderers being the lowest. The stops will be erected in Tonga Bay stone, and will be a handsome improvement to tho Church Hill.

The annual meeting of the Kelson Jockey Club will be held at Mercer's room this evening at eight o'clock, when a full attendance of membors is hoped for.

The orchardists in the vicinity of Hastings, especially those in a suiail way of business, are very much perturbed at being cited in the general labourers' dispute, and the claims that are being made for a minimum of 10s per day for all workers in the orchards. They contend that such expensive labour Will mean ruin to the industry.

Another continuous picture theatre, is to be erected in Christchurch, some Wellington people being the promoters (says the "Press"). The new theatre is to be erected on a site, on the northwestern corner of Cathedral square, in the vicinity of tho Government Life Insurance building.
