REPLIES TO TOD SLOAN

[Press Association —Copyright.]

LoJllJon, June 9

Cannon, a loading English jockey, denies Tod Sloan's assortum thai English jockeys have lost their nerve, which he declares as absurd. 'Hie main reason for the lack of initiative in English jockeys, is the insecurity of tenure. Owners arc.now constantly putting Frenchmen and Americans up, and the Englishman rides every race in fear of being superseded.

- Lord Lonsdale says that the fault lies not in'want -of norve, but in the adoption of tho unnatural American seat.

A fatal duel under unusually atrocious conditions was fought yesterday morning (April 18) near Halberstadt. The principals were Lieutenants Yon Puttkammer and Yon Heeringen, both of tho 27th Infantry Regiment. The conditions were 15 paces, tho combatants to continue firing until one or both fell. At the first exchange of shots Puttkammer was slightly wounded in tho hand. Subsequently Heeringen was shot in tho abdomen, and has since died of his wound. It is understood that Lieutenant Yon Puttkammer challenged Lieutenant Yon Heeringen on account of a love affair between the latter and Puttkarhmor's wife. Lieutenant Yon Heeringen is a nephew of the Minister of War.—"Chronicles" correspondent.

The Chinese Government are endeavouring to reduce tho number of employees in the public departments, but this work of retrenchment is giving no end of trouble. Nearly every time an order is issued for the dismissal of members of any particular staff there is at once a strike of the entire force in that department. The result has been the vacant places have frequently been filled by more efficient men, but the strikes have seriously impeded public business. The Premier, Tang Shao Vi, has resigned in consequence of tho attacks upon the National Council for their alleged prodigal expenditure of recent small loans. The revised Budget calculations for the current year show that the revenue is estimated at £41,580,000, and the expenditure at £80,640,000.
