THE OTIRA TUNNEL.

A SOFT PATCH STRUCK.

(Special to "Tho Colonist.")

Ghristchurch, Juno 10

Tho bottom heading of tho great Otira tunnel is at present in a very "rotten" patch of country, which was run into about a week ago. After firing out the roof keeps dropping down, and Las to bo well timbered. The bar for working the drilling machine on has given place to two tripods, which carry"tho machine when boring the necessary holes for blasting, and as the country is very soft not many holes are required, for the timber has to be kept within a few feet of the face. It is anticipated that the present soft patch will soon cut out, as a soft wet patch is often met with after going through dry country.
