A CRIMINAL'S CAREER

Cfrristchurch, May 9. The police records of the Dominion show clearly the manner in which some undesirables gain entrance into New Zealand and then assist to swell the ranks of tho criminals in the country (says the "Lyttelton Times"). During th© past year a deserter from a Home liner was caught by the police, but unhappily the boat from which ho had absconded had left the Dominion. The man was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, and at the end of his terra was released. A little while afterwards he again fell into-the hands of tho polico mid was convicted on two charges oi' theft. Again he was sentenced, and again he was released when ho had concluded his torni, A little later it was discovered -that he was a well known British criminal who had served seven yoarf; in gaol for manslaughter. Tho police wero"ppv/erless in tho matter, and their only .hope is that ho will sooner or later bring-himself again within the four corners of the law..
