PLANS AND ESTIMATES,

At last night's meeting of the City Council the City Engineer (Mr. J. G. LittlejohrO presented a report, accompanied by-plans and estimates, on tho subject of tho swimming baths it is proposed to erect on alternative sites at the Port .and on the Maitai rivor. With regard to baths on the old sito at the Port, the estimate was £4700. Tho buildings were estimated at £1630, including plumbing and drainage, the tank at £2670, including foundations for tho buildings, and access bridges from tlio road. A contingency allowanco of £400 was provided. Similar baths on tho banks of tho Maitai, on tho Council's land, would cost £3300. The only modification that could he made was in tho buildings, tho main building being estimated at £9,35, and the dressing sheds at £394. In the Maitai scheme tho buildings could bo materially reduced in cost, but at the Port it would be Hecessary to erect tho wholo front and the two ends at least.

Cr Harloy thought thoro was no demand for baths at the Port. He favoured tho Trafalgar street site. Tho Mayor thought tho cost was ' a little too high. He understood tho City Engineer could modify tho plans. The City Engineer said that would bo possiblo with regard to the buildings. Cr Harley said they should orect creditable baths if.the ratepayers would (sanction tho proposal. The Mayor said the Council should call tho citizens' committee- together and lay the plans before them.

Tho City Engineer was requested to report on any modifications of the plans he found possible.
