Fivo revolutionary generals, including Alfare, arrived at Quito on Sunday, and were immediately imprisoned! When tho populace learned of their arrival a mob of 5000 attacked the guards, who fired a voliey, killing several.

The mob tore doivn a portion of the walls of the jail, dragged the generals from their cells, and killed them together with other prisoners who were supporting the revolutionaries. Tho bodies were dragged through tho streets to the San Diego cemetery whore they were burnt. The fury of the populace was due to tho tremendous losses sustained by both armies in the, battle of Yagnach on January 16th.
