THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.
REPUBLICAN TACTICS,
REPORTED ESPOUSAL OF M:R
ROOSEVELT,
[ PiiESs Association—Copyright.]
Washington, Jan 7
According to responsible newspapers the Republic-all leaders are stipporting a subterranean movement to supplant President Taft's candidature by Mr Roosevelt, because Mr Roose\clt is more likeiv to carry the country. The_ "Sun" alleges that Mr Roosevelt is cognisant of tho insurgents' movements, and moreover, that he lias shown little repugnance to joining the campaign to discredit Mr Taft. The "Sun" adds that the situation is an almost imprcccdentcdly difficult and delicate one. and only Mr Roosevelt's categorical statement'that he will not accept nomination can clear the air. Such a statement is not expected, anyhow for the present. Meanwhile Mr Taft's friends are not discouraged, believing that the dignity of Mr Taft's attitude, compared with the insurgents' methods and Mr Roosevelt's attacks on tho Administration, must tell in Mr Taft's favour.
The Democrats are threatened with a recrudescence of Bryanism. Many •Senators formerly opposed to arbitration treaties in the present form are now inclined to accept them with Mi Elihu Root's amendment, excluding from arbitration under the Monroe Doctrine the questions of the control of immigration and America's indebtedness.
