THE FRUIT TRADE.
In connection with the threatened strike in the shipping trad© and its probable effect on the fresh fruit industry, a public meeting was convened by the Mayor and was held on Monday evening. Mr C. E..Lowe occupied the chair and moved, 1 hat in the opinion of this meeting, so that if in the event of the maritime strike becoming universal, some steamship kS between Wellington and Motn■>ka should be maintained. Mr Little seconded the motion, which urns carried unanimously. Both the mover and seconder spoke strongly on the fact that the Government should step in and see that perishable fruit should ha marketed.
"Mr John Foster, the contractoi for the new harbour works, is getting; tho work under way. The dredge kovhai has arrived, and a cargo of timber has arrived for llie pontoons, etc. Jl;e pile driver and other machinery is expected shortly, and work will then tho Itiwaka Central Tennis Club played the Motuoka W\ies on Wednesday afternoon. lie match took place at Motueka and the home team won by 6 sets to 4 and ,o games to 38. The Central Club wes represented by Misses L. *>\y asm J>Hate Mesdaraes M. Askew, Les. Duncan,'©, Atkins and P. Bate. 11-" Motueka team was: Misses like, Douglas C. and N. Boundy, Batchclor and 'Mrs. Canavan. The games were even and well contested and there was little difference ni tho teams, The home team provided afternoon tea- and an enjoyable time was spent both by the players and spetcatovs.
