MURCHISON.

On Wednesday evening the Murchison Glee Company gave a concert on behalf of the Domain. The following was the programme:—Pianoforte solo, Miss 6. Wadsworth; comic song, Mr. AVheatley; gloe, the company; Song, Miss Bredbury; cornet solo, Sir. J. Fowler; song, Mr. C. Randerson; quartette, Mrs Boyes, Miss Wadsworth, Messrs Lawronco and Wkeatloy; song, Miss Wadsworth; gloe, the company; pianoforte duet, Misses O'Rourke and Wadsworth; song, Mr. AVheatloy; glee, the company; song (chorus by company), Mr. C. Randerson ; song, Miss AVadsworth; violin solo. Miss A. Hunter; song, Mr. AVheatley; glee, the company. At the close of the entertainment Mr. Bredbury, on behalf of the Domain Board, thanked the company for thoir efforts to help the Board, lie said that he thought the company with tlipir conductor, Mr. IT. Boyes, deserved great praise for their performance. The National Anthem then brought the entertainment to a closa. On Thursday night the Kugby Union held a ball in Dun-ant's Hall. The attendance was not very large, but this was no doubt due to the unsettled state of the weather. During the evening the cup winners, the Maruia Club, were presented with the I oup by Mr. Durrant.
The Ladies' Tennis Club had decided to open the season on Saturday. The weather was, however, so rough and stormy, that it was decided to postpono the opening to a later date. MOTUEKA BOROUGH COUNCIL. Tho monthly meeting was held on Tuesday evening. Present, His Worship the Mayor (Mr C. E. Rowe) in the chair, and Crs Moffatt, Cate, Grooby, Staples, Brougham and Simpson. The Inspector waa instructed to have the lire, bell stand erected as soon as possible. The .N'.tyor pointed out that there would be a difficulty in financing the proposed lire prevention scheme, but the risk of a conliagratiou was still very great. Mr O. C. AVilkinson, representing the citizens' committee, reported to tho Council as to tho different fire ■.•ngines that had been placed under offer to the committee. No offer was considered satisfactory, and he recommended tho Council to purchase a good manual engine. Cr Moffatt supported the idea of a I manual engine. He quoted figures to show that a good second hand one could bo landed in Nelson for £100
Cr Brougham supported the purchase of three small pumps that could be easily handled, and would be ir. -iction much quicker than a manual
engine. The Mayor moved that Crs Moffatt, srom>harn and Simpson be a sub-com-inittco to yo into the question and report at next meeting.—Carried. Cr Brougham brought forward the question'of protecting the river bank ■■ti Whakaiewu, He was quite certain that a different mode of work would be necessary to make the work permanent. Cr Grooby favoured the present pile and boom work being extended, and this view was expressed by Crs Simpson and Moffatt. - It was resolved that the Clerk applj to the Department for authority to proceed with the work. ' From the Public AVorks Departing stating that a sum of £400 was available for river protection works sii Wliakarewa and asking the Council It undertake the work.—Received. From Messrs Easton and Nirholron ; stating that the Public Works Department would agree to Greenwood street being exempted from section i 117 of the Public AVorks Act providing the f"n"C on the northern side was set back to the proper boundary.-Ke-"^The Inspector reported that Green Lane had been formed, and advance ',ad been taken of the presence of th. road grader to trim up the sides of the streets. The foothpath was bcinp formed on the western sido of Hnth stitoet, hut he still thought ihat pipes should have been put in on tho street boundary- . , For the concrete kerbing for tho footpath Messrs Stilwell and Co tendered for 700 feet at £2 15s per 100 feet.—Accepted. Accounts were passed for payment amounting to £54 7s.
