EDUCATION BOARD.

The Board resumed its monthly mooting yesterday morning there being present, Messrs A .T. Maginnity (chairman), Smith, Franklyn, Belike, Lock, Munson, Fair and Shepherd.

Accounts wore passed for payment amounting to £2,953 15s 3d.

Applications were dealt with for toachorships as follows: sth assistant, Nelson Boys' School, nine applications —It was resolved to forward to the Town Schools Committee the names of Mary K. Kitehing, Julia C. Wright, and Jessie A. Hill, in the order named. Robert Broun was appointed teacher of the To Knha School, ho being the only qualified applicant. It was resolved to forward the names of Phyllis Lewis, Alice 0. Raikes, and Alice N. Neumann in the order named as applicants to the Hope School Committee for the assistant teaohership of that school. Adelleine Bettje Mann was appointed as1 assistant, and Ellen Dunn as pupil teacher at the Denniston School.

The Inspectors reported having inspected the following schools during the past month, with the undermentioned results : Good—Hope, Foxhill, Stoke, Applchy, Waimea West, Spring Grove, and Wai-iti. Satisfactory to good—Richmond. Aniseed Valley, Brightwater, Redwood's Valley, and Tarahi. Satisfactory—Wakefield, 88 Valley, Hillside, Pigeon Valley, Happy Valley, Gordon, Kcituna, Fcrntown, Ra'nzau, and Collingwood. A letter wns read from the Department regarding Scholarship regulations. The Chief Inspector (Mr. Harkness) said the alterations were chiefly verbal ones. It was resolved to agree to the suggestions forwarded.

A letter was read from the Department respecting free text books grnnt extended to Standards 5 and 6.—Referred to the Inspector to report upon. A circular from the Department suggested that the date of school committee'clections be fixed so as to fall on a moonlight night.—lt was rosolvod that the suggestion meets with the approval of tho Board.

The Department notified that charts dealing with how to treat the apparently <lrnwnod had been distributed to the schools.

An application for a. household school was forwarded to the Korcro Committee to report upon. The chairman's action regarding an application for a household school at Wrstha i*en» was approved. Tho report of tho Technical Committed was read and received.

There w^re 12 applicants for the position as instructress in cookery at Roefton and Westport centres. The Technical Committee and the Inspectors, to whom the applications had been referred, placed Marjorie Wildman first and Beatrice Sibbald second. It was resolved to offer the position to Miss M. Wildman, and failing her taking it, it to bo offered to Miss B. Sibbald.

Regarding a complaint received from Kaka, it was resolved to send the teacher's explanation to the party complaining.

Regarding.a complaint from Kiwi, the matter was postponed awaiting the teacher's explanation.

Regarding a complaint from Uritwhonua, it was resolved that the teacher's letter bo forwarded to the committee, the teacher to abide the instructions of the Committee.

'Die Baton School Committee wrote requesting that the children be examined in their own school.—Referred 1o the Inspectors to arrange.

A letter was received respecting holidays at Whangarao School.—lt was resolved to inform the Committee that the Board's instructions must lie adhered to, the holidays being six weeks at Christmas, one week in May, and one, week in September.

It was resolved to forward the applications received for positions as examination supervisors to the proper authorities.

Mr Hewlett was appointed as teacher at Clifton Terrace, and Miss ShirtlifF as assistant at Stoke.

The resignations were accepted of Mr. Rasmusson as pupil teacher at Dennistnn and Miss Shirtliff as assistant at Hone.

Mr. Shepherd drew attention to the Crondon School. He thought there were too many scholars for one teacher (36 to 37) to look after, but according to the regulations an assistant could not be appointed. He thought the people in the district should try and bring the number of pupils up a littlp more so that an assistant could be e'nimed. As things were they were not fair to the teacher nor to the scholars.

The chairman said the next meeting would be their nnnual one. He thought it was desirable that a change should be made in the chairmanship. He was a. very busy man, and the work of the chairman had increased greatly. He hoped the members would seriously consider the matter, and if they could relieve him he would consider it a favour.

Mr. Franklyn said that so long as Mr. Maginnity remained a member of the Board lie (Mr.* Franklyn) hoped that Mr. Maginnity would be the chairman, as he the most suitable man fen- the position.

Mr. Beuko moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mb. Maginnity for the cxceHont way in which' ho had always conducted the business of the Board.

Mr. Lock seconded the motion. Mr. Maginnlty had devoted an enormous amount of time to the business, and lip bad filled the position of chairman with great ability. Mr. Maginnity had given the Board his best and most earnest .services.

Mr. Shepherd said that Mr. Maginnity was the. most efficient chairman that ho had had experience of.

Mr. Munson said Mr. Maginnity had proved to be a very excellent chairman and had done good service in that position.

The motion was carried unanimous-

Mr Maginnity thanked the members for their kindly expressions, and for the vote. He honed they would consider what he said. The meeting then adjourned.
