A deputation from the conference of represantatives of tramway systems waited on the Minister for Public Works, Mr R. McKenzie, to-day, to express their views on tha proposed tram regulations. ■ > . ~ When Councillor Smith. acting-May-or of Wellington. rone to speak, Mr McKenei* taid that Mr Smith's conduct had been «o discreditable that he preferred to deal with someone else. ' '..."■ Mr Smith: I think your remark* are
quite unjustifiable for one who is a Minister of the Crown. \,
The Minister: You can think what you like. That is my opinion. In the course of further remarks Mr McKeuzie said that no honourable man would do what Mr Smith had done.
Mr Smith: I protest! You have no right to speak to me like that. Mr McKenzie: You had better bo quite civil, or else I will order yo\i out of the room.
Mr G. T. Booth, chairman of the Christchurch Tramway Board, then made representations on behalf of the Conference, after expressing regret at the incident.
