THE ENGLISH MAILS.

[United Press Association.]

Wellington, June 8

At ,1 meeting of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce yesterday, the question of mail connection between Australia and Now Zealand was considered, and the consensus of opinion \jjas that the needs of the Dominion a? a whole would be best served if the inward European mail, which now leavesSydney for Auckland on Wednesday, were to leave Sydney for Wellington direct on Monday. In tho ordinary course it would then reach. Wellington on Friday forenoon, Auckland on Saturday morning, and Dunedin on Saturday evening, which would be a grcal gain. The Council felt that if such r. change in the inter-colonial stcamej time table involved any extra expense tlir>. cost might fairly be met by a subsidy ; and to effect this it was'decided to approach the Government and thr steamship companies concerned.
