FINED FOR AN ASSAULT.

Wellington, May 17

At the Supreme Court to-day, William John Carpenter was charged with assaulting Nicholas Richard Normilepo go as to cause him bodily harm. Both men had been employed on the steamer Tainui and the prisoner admitted the assault, but pleaded provocation, and that he had acted in self defence. The jury returned a verdict of guilty, with a recommendation to mercy. His Honour, the Chief Justice, said lie believed the assaultwns committed in a sudden .heat of passion, and was not premeditated. The prisoner would be fined £20. It wr.s subsequently stated that the amount of tho fine had boon subscribed in the Court.
