MR. ALLEN'S CRITICISMS.

Auckland^ May 16. Mr. Allen, M.P., speaking at Auckland, followed up the statement made at Hamilton that the Courts of Justice in New Zealand were subject to improper influence. He said that a judge might unconsciously he influenced by the Government voting money in the form of an appropriation for pay ment for services. The Chief Justice Mr. Allen continued, was a member of the Statutes Compilation Commission, which cost the Dominion £5,626, of which he received a very considerable share. Ho was a member of the Native Lands Commission, which cost £9842. Legislation had been placed on the Statute Book to prevent improper influence being exercised on the judges, and it wag improper to go .beyond that statute by means of votes upon the Estimates to give a judge more money that he was paid by salary.
