SAD FATALITY AT TAHUNA.

DEATH OF MR, CHARLES LAMB

(Fr-.ni 'The Colonist," Miy 2 )

It was reported on Sunday night that Mr. Charles Lamb, a well known resident of Nelson, was missing, am", yesterday afternoon his body was: found on the b.oaeh at Tahuna, near the Bind Channel. It appears, from enquiries made, that Mr. Lamb met with an accident while cycling along tho Hocks road on Sunday, afternoon. His machine skidded, and he wa: thrown over the stone breastwork on to the rocks below, sustaining several scalp wounds and a bruised shoulder. A superficial examination yesterday indicated cerebral hemorrhage. His bicycle was also damaged. The injuries to Mr. Lamb's head woro attended to by a passer by, and he appeared to he recovering, although of course, suffering from shock, he being a heavy man, ami the distance from the surface of the road to tlio beach being some eight or nine feet. Mr Lamb was sufficiently recovered to arrange for his hjnyclo to be taken to a cycle dealer's in town for repairs, and tliis was done. He was sp.on walking on the sand hills at Tahuna later in the afternoon by several persons, with whom, he passed the time of day, an<l nothing out of the ordinary was noticed. About 5 o'clock he waved his hand to three acquaintances who were returning from the Blind Channel, and this is probably the last time- ho was seen alive. As deceased had not returned home a search was made along the beach ai Tahuna yesterday with the result stated. The body when found was fully dressed and his watch, which was in his waistcoat pocket had stopped at 5.15, thus indicating that he met his death at that hour. If the circumstances detailed, above are correct it would appear that the deceasod, after apparently recovering from the shock of his accident, wandered about for some time in a semi-dazed condition, nnd then collapsed on the beach, and was caught by tho incoming tide and drowned.

The lato Mr. L&.mb had been in tho employ of, Messrs' Everett Bros., of this ctty, in charge of the tailoring department for the past ten years, and only recently severed his connection with the firm in order to start business on his own account in Wanganui. Prior to that he was in the employ of Messrs Kirkcaldie and Stain?, LfctL, Wellington, having come from Sydney to join that firm. While in Nelson he made many friends, and took an active iufcwest in several local organisations. Ho was a Pag^ Master i.£ the Southern Star LoAge of Freemason, an ox-President of tho Maitai Bowling ohib, and an ex-President of the City Club. Only last week ho was farewelled by these bodies and wag the recipient of several presentations, the last, on Saturday afternoon, being made by th^ Maltai- Bowling Crub. He was a genial, good-hearted: mail, and deservedly popular, ant) tho news of his untimely end will come as a groat shock to many, He had made all arrangements to leave for Wanganui, and had intended leaving lyt this morning's steamer for \VeJtingion. Deceased leaves a widow and three sons, with whom the deepest sympathy will bo felt in their bereavement. The eldest son is now in Sydney, and intended joining his father iii business in Wanganui, tlio second son is m the post office at Nelson, and the youngest is learning sheep farming.
