Mdlle. Dolores and party were present at Haywards' Pictures last evening. Mr. Walter Bevan, a barrister, has been appointed Solicitor-General, says I a Sydney cable, the office being revived in order to relieve Mr Holman who is acting-Premier during Mr McGo wen's absence at the Coronation. A Press* Association telegram from Ash burton states that Mr A. McClure, Tow.ii Clerk of Ca-mpbelltown, was last night appointed Town Clerk of Ashburton, in succession to the late Mr. H. H. Fooks. There were 42 applicants for the position. A Timaru press message says that the Timaru Presbytery sustains the call to the Rev. Frank Jeffrys, of Dunedin, to St. Andrews, vacant by tho resignation of the Rev. J. H. G. Chappie, who has established a Unitarian congregation at Timaru. At the Nelson Bowling Club rooms last evening a large number of the members of the club met to welcome home the Rev. W. S. Lucas, a past president of the Club. The president, Mr. W. W. Squires, occupied the chair and Mr. John Sharp junr, vice-presi-dent, tlie vice chair. The health of the guest of the evening was proposed in most felicitous terms by the chairman, and opportunity was thus afforded for the members to .show howwarm is their regard for Mr. Lucas, who made a very happy reply in which he spoke feelingly of his joy at once more finding himself with his Nelson friends. Opportunity was taken to wish Mr. Henry Baigent, one of tho oldest members of the CCub, and a past president, a pleasant sojourn in the Old Country and a safe return, Mr. Baigent suitably acknowledging tho compliment paid him on the eve of his first venture.beyond the shores of the- Dominion. The' health of the President was duly honoured and a pleasant hour was spent socially at the close of the formal proceedings.
