SERGT.-MAJOR JONES.

The death occurred at Timaru on Sunday morning of Sergoant-Major Jones. He was born at Dowlais, Glamorgan, in 1853, and he joined when nineteen years of age the 94th Regiment Connaught Rangers. Sub- : sequently he went to the Aldershot Gymnasium, where he was successful, at the outset of his military career, in passing a niiltary course of gymnastics and fencing, obtaining, under the ! tuition of Colonel Reader, first-class certificates in both. When, in 1879, hostilities commenced in South Africa with the native tribes, ho went with his regiment to take part in the first Zulu war, and bis records show that he fought in three general engagements. Sergeant-Major Jones, too, was_ present at the burial of Prince Louis Bonaparte, better known to English speaking people as the Prince Imperial. The Zulu campaign over, ' he returned to his home in England. For two years he held the position of sergeant-instructor to the British Constabulary, and then, probably in the year 1885, being appointed drill instmctor to the South Canterbury division of volunteers, he came out to this country. In that capacity ho served for over twenty years. At the Latter end of the year 1904 he was ap-poink-d drill instructor to the: Nelson district, where, after 18 months' ser- j vice, ill-health again began to trouble him, and on this occasion be retired. , He immediately returned to Timaru, | and with ibis wife has resided there ever since. Deceased was accorded a military funeral.
