THE GOLDEN BAY DAIRY COMPANY.

LAYING THE FOUNDATION STONE OF THE NEW FACTORY.

(From "The Colonist." Jan. 30.

The foundation stone of the Golden Bay Dairy Company's .now factory at Takaka was laid on Saturday afternoon by Mr W. J. Reilly, chairman of directors, in the presence of a large attendance of intoi-ested spectators. Before performing the formal ceremony, Mr Reilly, in the course .of a short speech, reviewed the history of the old factory. He said it was built by Messrs J. J. Langridge and Co., and was opened on 11th November, 1894, and the first season ran from that date until the 16th April, 1895. The first suppliers were Messrs C. Malpas, C. W. Nalder, J. C. Nalder, G. Winter, .senr., J. W. Moulder, R, T Langford, Geo. Duncan, John Page, T. and J. Haldane, J. Haldane, J F. Rose, F. Parker, P. B. Packard, T Band, Mrs Wilkinson, K. R. Followes, E. Packard, J. W. Sigley, W. Newlove, and L. Newlove, and their total for the first week was only 1203 gallons. In the year 1908 Messrs J. Langridge and Co. offered the factory for sale, and in 1902 it was purchased by a co-operative company. Since that time the output had increased to such an extent that it had been necessary to erect creameries in different parts of the district. On Friday last milk received at the factory totalled 20,4501b5, at the West road creamery 49561b5, at East road creamery 4500 lbs, and at Long Plain 61871b5, a total of 36,0831bs for one day, as against 12031bs for the first week of the factory's existence. About 15801bs of butter was now made daily, and the output last year was 128 tons, while this year the quantity was expected to exceed 150 tons. Mr Rilcy said the company deserved credit for erecting the new building, which was being constructed of eamerated concrete, and was the first of its kind in the district, and when completed Mould be one of the most up-to-date factories in the Dominion. Mr Reilly contended that if Messrs Langridge and Co. were justified in building a factory for the number of suppliers he had mentioned the company were more than justified in going in for the present building. Mr Reilly then laid the foundation stone, amidst applause. Mr J. F. Rose felt sure the directors would never regret going in for a building of that description, and said they-should be complimented on their enterprise. Mr T. Symes, who liad been one of the first suppliers to the old factory, said he had watched the growth of the industry sinos it was started, and it demonstrated what could bo done by energy and enterprise. He contrasted the time when farmers received 4d a pound for their butter—and then it vas take out—with the present timo when they received 9d cash for their butter fat. ! Mr L C West, of Palmerston North, is the architect of tho new factory, which is being erected by Mr S. M. 'Galbraith. of Nelson. Mr Galbraith presented Mr Reilly with a silver trowel, suitably mount- j cd, in commemoration of the occasion. Tlie directors then entertained the public with refreshments, and cheers having been given the gathering ,dispersodi
