THE FEDERAL ELECTIONS.

LIBERALS V. LABOURITES.

A CLEAR CUT ISSUE,

THE REFERENDUM PROPOSALS.

[Pbms Association— Copyright.]

Sydney, April 13. The weather is fine for tha Federal elections to-day. The morning papers predict that if the voters do their duty the Liberals will hold their own. On the other hand Labour is splendidly organised and vary confident. In most of the electorates there will be a straight-out' fight, "independents" being less numerous than at previous elections.

Tho reforendum on the finance question complicates the issue. The "Herald" advises the voters to Bay "Yes" to both the financial agreement between the Commonwealth and the States, and the transfer of State debts, while the "Telegraph" advocates "Yes" to the agreement, and "No" to the transfer. The "Herald," in the course of an article supporting the Government, says: "Upon the Liberal electors of New South Wales is to-day thrown the onus of showing that the Newcastle strike receives no public approval." There was a rush when the boothß were opened this morning, but voting since then has bee£i proceeding steadily. AH parties are working hard, and heavy polls are promised. Women are rolling up well.
