ST MARY'S CHURCH.
CARNIVAL AND BAZAAR. The 7 carnival and bazaar in aid of tlie parish work of St. Mary's Church for which preparations have been proceeding apace for somo time, was inaugurated at the Theatre Royal last night. ThereHvas a large attendance, some 600 people being accounted for at the ticket office, and that the crowd was a buying one was shown by the satisfaction of the stall holders. The Rev Father Mahoney briefly declared the carnival open at 8 o'clock, and business commenced briskly. The 3talls are loaded with attractive goods, mu6h of the fancy work being the work of the Sisters and pupils of the Convent. The stalls are semi-circular in shape, an arrangement which besides adding to the effectiveness of the -stalls, allows of more floor space. The Oddfellows' Hall, next door to' the Theatre, is requisitioned for use as a tea kiosk, being connected, with the niain building by a covered way. Another tea' kiosk is te be'ibund on tho balcony outside the dvc.:s circle. The whole of the arrangements are most complete, and reflect much credit upon the manager, Mr Ben Crisp,' and his assistants. % The dancing, which forms the nightly programme, is under the direction .of Signor Borzoni, who has been coaching his pupils for sono weeks, and their work on tho stage last night spoke volumes for their, instructor, and for their own aptitude. The programme opened with a march, tableaux and waits-, in which thirty-two young ladies took part, and which was executed most successfully. Sixteen boys appeared next ih a oon-.'c sketch "Our Dear Friends, the Basutos." A polka brilliant-, "The Flower Girls," afforded a very effective spectacle.and gavottes and cake walks were almost equally striking. A number of dances.' in which little girls, tastefully attired, took part, found strong favour with the audience; An orchestra under the leadership of Mrp Murphy rendered efficient assistance.
