DEPUTATION FBOM CHAMBER . OF COMMERCE. (By Telegraph.) (From Our Own Correspondent.) Murchison, March 28. The deputation from the Nelson Chamber of .Commerce met the Murchison branch in the public library on Friday evening. Messrs Field, W. W. Siiodgrass, Grove, and Fleming represented the Nelson Chamber, and Messrs Lynch (the County Chairman), Hodgson, Downie, Kerr, O'Brien, and Brown represented the local branch; and several other representative men of the district were present. Mr Field (President .of the Chamber) was in the chair, and after the minutes of tbe last meeting were read and confirmed, the Chairman explained that the Nelson members wore there to confer with the people of Murchison and to ascertain what were their needs, and in what manner the Nelson Chamber could help tho district. A letter was read from the Public Works Department, stating that the plans and specifications were being prepared for tho local Post and Telegraph'office. It was resolved on the motion of Messrs Lynch and O'Brien, that Mr Colvin, M.P., be written to thanking the Minister for his assurance that the office .will be proceeded with, and asking that they be ensured that the"" building will be adequate for the requirements of this rising district. It was resolved that tlie Government be asked for a grant of £1000, to improve the ioad to the Maruia Hot Springs. . ' - On the motion of Messrs Walker and Kerr it was resolved that the Lands and tlie Tourist Departments be asked for £500 each for the same purpose. It was resolved on the motion or Messrs Bredbury and Downie, that the Post and Telegraph Department be asked to extend the telephone service from Glenroy to the Maruia post 'office, a distance of about 16 miles. As an inducement to the Department to extend this line, Councillor George Thompson offered to-supply the poles for the line* at 8s 6d each. It was resolved 'that tho Government be urged .to spend the £150 available for river protective'works near the Matakitaki bridge without delay, as the piers of the bridge are in imminent danger of being undermined. Mr Snodgrass (vice-president of the Nelson Chamber) expressed on behalf of the President (Mr Field) and the other' delegates from Nelson their pleasure in meeting the Murchison members of the Chamber, and other representative men of the place. He dwelt on the great, difficulties the back block settlers had to contend with, and contrasted their lot with that of the Nelson people, who had every convenience and comfort. He thanked the Murchison people for • their unstinted ' hospitality, and un- . failing kindness to the Nelson delegates, and heartily thanked the ladies for the excellent suppor provided that evening. Mr Field (President) spoke in similar terms, and asked that the vote of thanks to the ladies be carried by acclamation, a request that was promptly and heartily responded to by all' present. Mr Field also explained the reasons which prevented several other Nelson gentlemen from being present, who had intended te be there. • . Mr Lynch moved and Mr Bredbury seconded a vote of thanks to Mr Field for presiding at the meeting, and the motion was carried unanimously, and was duly acknowledged. The proceedings throughout were of a most enthusiastic nature. The Nelson delegates were shown all the places of interest around Murchison, and everything possible was done to make their visit enjoyable. It is hoped that sucli visits from Nelson friends will be more frequent in the future than they have been in, the past. "••
