FIRE NEAR WANGANUI.

SOAP WORKS DESTROYED. . Wanganui, March 27. A disastrous fire broke out in Gilherd's soap works at Castlecliff oh".' Saturday night.. On the discovery of the outbreak a message was sent to r Wanganui for the fire brigade, which sent its steam fire engine, but by the time the engine arrived the works had practically disappeared. Messrs Scott and Son's fellmongery, a two storied wooden building alongside the soap works, had a marvellous escape, its safety being due to the efforts of jl bucket brigade. The origin of the fire is a mystery. The insurances on the soap works are £1000 in the South British office, £500 in the Ocean, and £500 in the Queensland. Messrs Soott had a floating policy on the stock in the New Zealand and British Dominions insurance offices.
