A POPULAR MEDICO.

FAREWELL TO DR HOWARD. On Saturday evening last Dr and Mrs Howard, who are leaving Murohison, were tendered a banquet by the Medical Association and Mataki < Lodge of Oddfellows, writes our correspondent. The function was held in. Downie's Hall, and was- attended by about fifty persons from all parts of the county. Mr S. L. Fairhall, President of the Medical Association presided, and Mr Cvossman occupied the vice-chair. After the good things provided by Mrs Wylie had been done justice to and the usual loyal toasts honoured. Mr 0. S. Beilby proposed the health of the guests. Mr Beilby, in a happy speech, referred at length to Dr and Mrs Howard's sojourn of four years in Murchison, to their general popularity, and to the regret felt by all at their approaching departure. He concluded by wishing them health and success in their future life. Dr Howard, in responding, thanked the Association and Lodge heartily for so honouring them. He said he had always done his best for his patients, and had never refused to go out when called. Ho spoke of the happy relations always existing between himself and the Association and Lodge, and paid a tribute to the integrity of the. management committee by comparing the fact of his. going ,away without a penny owing by either, to many oilier associations which had not fulfilled their obligations. He much regretted leaving the many friends they had made, and Murchison and its picturesque surroundings. Other toasts were honoured as follows: — "The Army and Navy," proEosed by Mr Homer, responded to y Mr Fairhall. "The Murchison County," proposed by Mr Fairhall, and responded to by Councillors Terry and 6. Thomson. ."The Mining and Dairying Industries," by Mr Crossman, responded to by Messrs Beilby and Thomson. "The Commercial Prosperity, of Murohison," . by Mr Bredbury, responded to by Mr Fairhall. "The Veterans of Murchison," by Dr Howard, responded to by Messrs Downiej Oxnam, Thomson, and Wills. During the evening Mrs, Miss and Mr Fairhall sang, and contributed musical items, which were much enjoyed, and Messrs Beilby and Grossman recited. A hearty vote of thanks to Mr Fairhall and the flinging of Auld Lang Syne brought a most successful gathering to a close. Dr Howard and family are leaving Murchison for Tauinarunui, where in ' audition to prive practice, -Dr Howard" takes charge of the local Hospital. Dr Warneford, of Rawene, fills t Dr Howard's place in Murchison, and is expected to take up his duties I about the middle of February.
