EXHIBITION OF WORK

In order that the general public may bo afforded an opportunity of seeing the nature and extent of tlie work "executed by the. pupils attending the technical schools in this district, an exhibition will he held in the Nelson Technical School tin's afternoon and evening, to which a cordial invitation is extended to all interested to be present . Last evening the exhibition was open to members of load bodies, among those present being the Alayor (Air J. Piper). The display is a very comprehensive and interesting one, and well worthy of a visit of inspection, in fact aai hour or two can well be spent there with profit and pleasure. In the room to the left of the entrance passage will be found the manual training exhibits, mechanical drawings, and specimens of ironwork executed at the Westport Technical School. Included .in the manual training exhibits, from the Nelson Boys', Richmond and Stoke classes, aire some particularly good pieces of parquetry ■work, while among other things shown are set squares, etc. TJie object of this class of work is to train the boys to use tlieir eyes and hands and to work from drawings. Hie Stoke Orphanage boys' exhibit model "farm gates and ' farm buildings, as well as drawings from which they were constructed. The Wakefield and Wai-iti classes show manual training
exhibits similar to those exhibited by other schools. A number of useful articles of furniture, including tables, couches, chests of drawers, hearth kerbs, easy chairs, fern stands, etc., arc shown by tlie pupils attending
the evening classes at the Nelson and Wakefield schools. Tlie workmanship is excellent, and reflects great credit
on the pupils as well as the instructor, Mr A. G. Thompson. A complete set of models used in building construction made by tlie latter alsoattracted considerable attention. Examples of mechanical drawings, the Work of tlie pupils attending these ■classes under Mr P. Thompson are exhibited, the model from which the drawings aro taken being a wooden steam engine, complete jm every detail, which was made by the instructor. Ironwork from the .Westport Technical school is shown, including roasting stands, a wheel-barrow 'wheel,. etc., arid a wrought, iron magnet for the dynamo which, is now being built entirely by the.pupils.under/ the instruction of Mr Boswell,
for the purpose of supplying the cua;ncwit for sixty 6-can die power metallic filament lamps.' A jvateait desk,, -designed by the instructor-, and made by the pupils attending .tlie Westport classes is also on exhibition!. In this
desk the writing surface can be -set to any slope, and tlvo seat raised oslowered ■as 'required, while it also has" a^patented idea for protectirig'ithe ink well. A large number cf working models are also shown. In the room to the right of the passage in the main
are- exhibited Specimens of typewriting executed bj' pupils rattending the commercial classes, and blouses and other work; done by the pupils of tlie', dressmaking classes. The chemical laboratory, and. its very complete electrical plant, wireless telegraphy installation, and other interesting exhibits, is also open foainspection. Upstairs will be found the art exhibits by Miss Igglesden's pupils. : They include paintings from nature, monochrome- work, modelling, original designs, drawings- in, light' and shade, etc., aud some-of the. work is really excellent. In the carpentry room last evening the pupils were seen at "work, The evening class "is at present engaged in the constructivon of a motor boat, 22ft in lemgth, which wiE.be fitted with a -six-horse power eragine, that is now being-built hv the Westport 'engineering class. Work was also going on ih the pluinibing /room, arid a lead burning > macfhinej for maiding joints without "solder, • was , in full operation. Altogether the . exhibition is most iriterestirig. and wiU no doubt be well patronised to-day. ."
