CHURCH AND PRESS.
'[United Pbess Association.] Wellington, Feb. 2. The "Times" this 'morning.pub- '„ liahes " correspondence between the Eey. Father Hickson, administrator of the, Roman Catbolio diocese, and ■■ the managing editor of the news- ' paper. „ The former takes exception 1 to atatements in a signed letter published by the "Times?' as an attack on religion, and says that "if anything further of the - same nature were to appear I should ha»e ■to seriously consider the advisableness of counselling thobe under my care not to admit your paper into their "homes!"' The editor points out what is meant by "freedom of the press," and though disagreeing with tne writer's Statements considers that when a man has the courage to sign • 'his name to what he believes there " is no reason for refusing publicity, 1 and it is 'competent for those who disagree with him to place their views' on record in the same" way". He adds: "If I hear of any m- ■ stance in which you counsel those under-' your care not to .admit, the , paper to their homes, ,1 will take such steps as will be calculated to preserve its interests and at the same time expose the, peculiar taotics to ' whiob you have threatened to resort.;' I ■ m^ m *"^ ■■HM^M W^t W^^m MW
