NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP ATHLETIC MEETING.

(Per United Press Association.) Wellington, February 1. The New Zealand Championship Athletic meeting was held at the Basin Reserve this afternoon. There was tine weather, with a fresh, cool southerly breeze blowing, the latter affecting the runners in the home stretch. About four thousand persons were present. The performances in the lield events were poor, and both walking contests were robbed of a good deal of interest, owing to a couple of the contestants being disqualified, ln each event of the fiat races there v were keen contests, and in tbe hurdle events, Murray, who won the quarter under the standard time, had the bad luck to lose the 120 yards by falling at the first obstacle, and he merelyjran in for third points. Wellington retains the championship, having 793^ points, Canterbury 41, Southland 13, Auckland G, Otago 5J4. The results were :—

75 Yards Handicap: Cunningham 1, Goldsbridge 2. Just won. Time, 8 l-sth secu. Half-mile Championship: Trembath, Southland, 1 ; Burge, Wellington, 3. Also ran— Gosling. A good raco, but Trembath came out at the finish, Jand won fairly easily. Time, 2mins 2 l-sth sees. High Jump Championship: O. L. Orbell, Canterbury, sft 7in, 1; G. Thomassen, sft sj£in, 2; Oallaghan, Wellington, sft 3^in, 3. 100 Yards Flat Championship: Henderson, Wellington, 1; Bass, Canterbury, 2; Goodbehere, Wellington, 3. A good race, Henderson jnst catching Bass on the post, and winning by a yard. Time, -10 I-sth sees, which equals standard time. One Mile Walk: H. E. Kerr, Wellington, 1; P. H. Stubberfield, Canterbury, 2. Four started. Won easily. Time, 6mins 56secs.

Casey, Wellington, 17yds, 1: G. Drake, Christchurch, 12yds, 2; H. Dawson, 9yds, 3. Ten others ran. Woo by a couple of yards. Time, 33secs. One Mile Flat Championship: A. E. Burge, Wellington, 1: S. W. Moore. Canterbury, 1} TV A. ClaughtOD, Cantetbury, 3. Five others ran. It was> good race until the last lap, when Burge rushed through, and slipping his field, won easilyj by 15y£s. Time, 4mins 42 j 2-sth sees.

Pole Jump: E. McKav, Auckland, 10ft 3m, 1 : McKay, ' Wellington, 10ft, 2; H. Callaghan, Wellington, Oft 9in, 3. Alao jumped— Evenson. 220 Yards Championship: E. Fisher, Wellington, 1 : H.. Henderson, Wellington, 2; W. Trembath. Southland, 3. A splendid race, which was won on the tape. Time, 23 4-5th r secs.

Three' Mile Walk Championship: P. H. Stubbertield, Canterbury 1; Kerr, Wellington, and Hogben, Wellington, 2. The other startera were disqualified for lifting. Time, 28m in 7 4-stb sees.

'Throwing the Hammer: J. Wallace, Wellington. 111 ft 3in, 1;G. 11. Henderson, "Wellington, 90ft 6in, 2; G. Thomassen, Wellington, 83ft Oin, 3. Four others competed. Wallace was far too good for his opponents, but his put was 19ft below the standard.

440 Flat Championship: Trembath, Southland, 1 ; Pollock. Wellington, 2: E. E. Foster, Wellington, 3. Also ran— Cunningham, Wellington. Won fairly easily. Time, 53 3-sth sees. Three Miles Flat Championship: G. Shame, Wellington, 1: S. W. Moore, Canterbury, 2; J. Frew, Ofcago, 3. Seven others ran. It was a splendid race, with ao excellent finish, being won in the last lap by three or tour yards. Time. 15m ins 40secs.

Long Jump: McKay, Wellington, and R. Mitchell, Otago, tied, with 19ft 3in. 1 : W. Pollock, Wellington, 19ft lin, 33. Eight others jumped. 410 Yards Hurdles Championship: H. Murray, Canterbury, J : tl. Cook, Wellington, 2: P. McGrath, Wellington, . Also raa— Bogle, Wellington; and Bust, Southland. Won very easily. Time, 59 4 Sth sees, which is I l-sth sees under the standard time.

- Relay Race: Wellington 1. Canterbury 2 No others ran.. Each of fche four men had to run a quarter of a mile, and the time for fche mile was 3m in 41 3 sth sees.

The visitors were entertained at a social to-night,at which the prizes were presented. Trie all-round champinoship was awarded to tho competitor scoring must points in putting the weight, 220 yards flat, mile flat, throwing the hammer, and long jump. Ifc resulted: L. McKay, Wellingon, 1: L. L. Paul, Wellington, 2; G. Thomassen, Wellmgfcton, 3. Tho shield has again been won by Wellington, scoring 744 wins, ; Canterbury 4, Southland 2, and Auckland 1.

It is announced that Messrs Henderaou and McKay, Wellington : Murray, Orbell and' Stubbertield, Canterbury ; and Trembath, Southland, will represent New Zealand at the Australasian Champonship meeting to be held at Hobarfc.
