THE HOLIDAY.

Saturday, Anniversary Day, proved tine, and for th*> time cf year pleasantly cool. The various excursions were well patronised, and there were'the usual crowds of- picnickers, the Maitai Valley attracting large numbers. The principal attraction was the ATHLETIC AND CYCLING J CLUB'S SPORTS, held at Trafalgar Park. There were about two thousand persons present, which may be regarded as a fairly satisfactory attendance, but is not sufficient to justify the Club in making the attractive programme they have done in the past for this particular day. The sport was on the whole fair The most noteworthy feature of tho cycle racing was the succssa of th« local riders. Fowler, Jacobsen and Ilefier are a well matched trio, and riding with judgment and consistently pacing each other they were able to take advantage of the assistance given by their handicaps, and the back-markers in consequence had <» *ny off. Fowler, who hails from Wiikefield, made his first appearance onlthe Nelson track, and riding very determinedly, pulled off [the Wheel Race, the mile, and mile and a half district handicaps, and the iirst event in the district championship. Jacobsen won the district championship points for Mr Geo. Sutherland's trophy, being first in the mile and second in the half. He was also second in the open mile, third in the Wheel Kace, and placed in each of the district handicaps. Heffer mod the open mile, was second in the Wheel Race and second in the mile event of district championship. N. Coleiuan also rode very welJ. Geo. Sutherland announces that te has made bis last appearance on tho racing track. He says that "it will take big money to bring rae out again." He was not well on Saturday, and twice failed to r come out in the finals for which he had qualified—in the mile, and Wheel Race. He got a second to Campion in the open mile and a half, but, it looked to be a bit of luck for Campion who evidenly caught Sutherland napping in" the last 30 yards, when Sutherland had a clear lead.

The cash athletic events were on tbe whole well contested, but amateur athletics appear to be in a moribund state in Nelson, an Scally. a Wanganui flier, had an easy thing'with his handicaps in the 100 an 220 yards handicaps, but a rehandicap in the quarter miile stopped his victorious The Citizens' Band enlivened the proceedings with a good programmo of music.
