Leonard, •attracted considerable attention. The dances were well executed the dainty and skilful evolutions of tho performers winning much applause. Miss Wright, under whose direction the dances were executed, deserves great credit for the manner in which they were presented. BAZAAK AND FANCY FAIR
On August 5 the Nelson Cifcizsns' Band Bazaar and Fanny Fair was formally opened ni; <■ ; : >f» Drill Hall by the Mayor (Mr .1. V.ujar) who stated that the object of the Bazaar was to raise funds to enable the Band to compete at the band contest to be held at Ashburtonh. The Citizens' Band, he said, were worthy \of support, as they were at all times willing to help in any good cause, and he hoped that as a result of the Bazaar they would be able to achieve their object. He hoped those present would, exercise their privilege of spending, and spend freely, for he noticed that the stalls were ladeu with useful and handsome articles. He wished the Band every success at the forthcoming contest, and concluded his remarks by declaring tte Bazaar open for business.
The Drill Hall, with its bare walis, has been transformed into a veritable fairy bower by an army of willing workers. Round two sides are ranged the tea kiosk and stalls, laden with useful and ornamental articles, produce aiid tasty commodities. On the other side is a miniature rifle range (under the able supervision of President Jones of the Nelson Defence Rifle Club), the popular 'Aunt Sally, " and other games, while at the end a substantial platform has been erected, with a proper proscenium, where the dainty and fancy dancing is executed by a number of performers, under the direction of Miss Wright. Greenery predominates in. the decorations, which aro relieved by flags hung in festoons from the rafters.
Last night the Hall was packed, and as the assistants from the various stalls, dressed in fancy costume, moved amidst the throng pushing ~the sale of their wares, tho scene presented was a bright and animated one. The side shows, too, were doing a thriving business, while the games of skill were also largely patronised. An interesting feature of the Bazaar is the Machinery Hall, where models ,of machinery, in full working order, tho handiwork of local craftsmen, miniature railway trains, and models of the Great Wheel at Earl's Court, also Buckingham Palace are shown. Vertical engines were shown by Mesrss J. Taylor, O. Roth well, and J. Jennens, and a horizontal steam ongins by Mr A. Aydou, jnr. , while a model of the "Great Wheel" wag exhibited by Mr F. N. Jones, jnr.
