NEW PLYMOUTH DEFEATED. (By Telegraph). Special to "Colonist. ' New Plymouth, July 23. The Nelson reps opened thoir Northern totir at New Plymouth today by beating the local ttfrtm by 5 goals to 2. The first spell was fast and open, Nelson getting three goals of which Hurst shot two and Wanstall 1. Taranaki got away with a rtish immediately the second spell opened and scored two goals in quick time. The visitors wefo not to be denied and responded with some good rushes, one ending in a goal by Hurst. Give and take play followed but from a good forward rush Wan stall got another goal, and so the game ended. Wimsett, La Mottee, Spear (2) wore the pick of the backs, and Hurst, Staples and Wanstall of the forwards. The representative match, Nelaon vorsua Tnranaki, will be played at Hawp.ra on Wednesday.
