U. S. A. AND JAPAN.
Received July 19, 10.6 p.m. New lork, July 19. The New York Herald has cabled to Viscount Hayashi, the Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs, stating that only a dozen newspapers out of 2200 sympathised with the Jingo demand for the transfer of the U.S.A. fleet to the Pacific and that, therefore it was untrue that the demonstration was backed by the entire American people. Count Hayashi replied that all Japan bad unshaken confidence in the policy of justice and peace displayed by the American Government and was convinced of the pacific oharacter of the 'situation and that the sensational reports appearing in a small section of the press did not reflect thtr nations mind. Received July 20, 0 25 a.m. The directors of the San Franoisco Merchants' Exchange announce that they are not in favor of any immigration law making discrimination against Japanesp. It is reported that the fruitgrowers of' Fresno County have made the discovery that Japanese are absolutely necessary, no white labor being available to pick fruit. 5
