Melbourne, Juno'll. After Mr Bauer, the diamond merchant, was murdered, Mr Cutler, a jeweller, of Little Colling street, informed the police that a man bad called at bis ahop and inquired for Mr Bauer's address a few days ago. The description of the man corresponded with that of a well-known Victorian criminal. Suspicion points to the fugitive having gone to Sydney. This idea fits in with the story that a man was seen to leave the building a few minutes after 5 o'clock. He hailed a cab, telling him to drive fast to the Spencer street railway station, to catc^ tbn Sydney express, which left at 5.5 p.m. The barque Eagle Craig, on the voyage from Liverpool, narrowly escaped destruction by fire, caused by a lnmp upsotting in the sail looker on April 13th. * The fire spread with alarming rapidity, but holes wore cut in the deck, and water was poured in, finally extinguishing the flamea. j A special meeting of the Federal Cabinet considered a cable from Mr Dsakin regarding mail matters. Sir John Forrest gave no information to the Press beyond stating that the Government was no -v in a position to negotiate finally for the extension of the Vancouver service. He hoped, to make a statement on the subject ehoitly. Adealide, June 11. Tho case ! against tho A.M. P. Society, which made no income tax return in 1902 on the ground that the law exempted Mutual Life Assurance Companies, was argued before the Supreme Court, which found that the Society in South Australia had an income of £28,502, which was taxable.
