THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL APPOINTMENTS

Auckland, January 26 On being interviewed on Saturday regarding the new Legislative Council appointments, the Premier said, "There is bound to be criticism and difference of opinion upon the ap. pointment of the Legislative Coun--1 cillors, but the question has to be looked at from the Colonial stand- ' point, and not from an entirely local 1 one. It was a most difficult matter i to settle on the allocations and ap--1 nointments were arrived at only after a consideration extending over 1 some weeks. The Government did i what appeared to be the best for the colony as a -whole. The telegrams I have had since the appointments 1 were made show, that on the whole ; they have been most favourably received. Tne Government had to give 1 consideration to the men who were ; already representing the differeni interests, and that necessarily came into the calculation. There are i great number of good men in th( country who would make excelleni ' Legislative Councillors, but then j is a limit to the number of appoint ments, and the Government can onlj 1 do what is fair and reasonable foi the requirements of the country. "
