NELSON ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
A special meeting of this Society was held at the Angler's Club Room last evening, Dr Andrew in the chair, and some fifteen members present. The first of the special matters for consideration was the prohibition by Government regulation of the use of dogs in deer hunting. Protest had bean made to the Government on previous v"occasions, u "occasions, and to the last protest no reply had been received. Mr Condell mo ved that another protest be forwarded, and that it be pointed out that the country nere was not suitable for stalking: moreover, that it was more sportsmanlike to shoot a deer while running, after being put up by dogs, than to pot it after stalking. The Chairman pointed out that a dog would secure a wounded beast that might otherwise- get away and die a miserable lingering death. Motion seconded by Mr W. A. Andrews, and carried. The matter of the Government taking over the Rotorua and trout fishing districts in Auckland was considered. |The unanimous opinion was adverse to the Government taking over the functions and revenue of Acclimatisation Societies, vyholly or in part, unless local Boards were appointed to^adminster the affairs for each district. Eventually it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Hanby. seconded by Mr Macdonald, "That this Society heartily sympathises with the Auckland Society in its protest against the unexplained annexation of its labor and revenue Dy Government; and instructs its Secretary to communicate with the Council of the Acclimatisation Societies Association with a view to securing a united protest from the Societies; and that members of Parliament for the district be asked to notify the Government of the action taken by this Society." It was further resolved that the Members for Nelson and Motueka be requested to ask the Government the
intention of the Government with regard to Acclimatisation Societies generally, in the direction of, taking ovei? BaiUd. Proposed by Dr. Andrew, seconded by Mr Condell. $Hg Mr Condell moved that the question of erecting fishermen's huts be deferred for the present. Seconded by Mr Pollock. Mr J. R. Macdonald proposed, and Mr T. Houlker, seconded,, that one hut be erected, iat Motupiko preferably; at a dost not to exceed £25, the weekly rental to be ss. Amendment lost, and . motion carried.
