UPPER MOUTERE.
On Wednesday evening, October 3rd, tbe Upper Moutere brethren of the Loyal Motueka Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U., held their second annual gathering, when about forty persons assembled at tne Public Hall. Be sdes the local members there were members of kindred societies, visiting members of other Lodges* (Manchester Unity), etc. After full justice had been done to the excellent repast, the Chairman, Bro. C. G. M. Boyce, P.G., proposed tbe toast of the "King and Royal Family, "which was drunk with enthusiasm. During the evening the following toasts were also honored :— "Loyal Motueka Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U.." proposed by Bro. Silcock (Vice-Chairman), ' responded to by Bro. W. Boyce, P.P.G.M., Secretary Motueka Lodge; "Other Lodges, i M.U. " feros Boyce— Silcook ; "Moutere Members, Loyal Motueka Lodge," Mr F. Kelling— Brc. Q. G. M. Boyce; "Kindred Societies,"
Secretary Motueka* Ledge— • Messrs Boundy (Motueka Druids), Francois (Foresters), Wilkens| (Kechabites) ; Hob and Hostess" Bros.^G. Cook — O. ißockmann; « "The" Ladies'" Messrs Boundy— F.' Kelling.
During the*evening the Chairman apologised for the unavoidable absence of Bro. J. D.'Beuke, owing to the illness of a relative. *gjj§ Bro. G. Cook, who Has left the district to reside in Nelson, was the recipient of a handsome pipe and case, presented by the Moutere brethren as a memento of appreciation of his services in connection with Oddfellowship. After drinking Bro. Cook's 1 health, the company sang "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow," and Bro. Cook suitably replied.
The inteivals between the toasts were enjoyably filled by songs by Messrs Kelling, A. Wilkens, A. Bensemann, G. Francois, J, Hart, lecitations by Mr Boundy,and musicil items by Mr C. Best.
A word of praise is due to Mr and MiaO Bockmann for the excellence of \he catering, as nothing better cou'd be desired, and seldom has a befcttr spread been seen at a country banquet. A hope was expressed that a gathering such as this would be held annually, because of its value in engendering good fellowship among the members, and, as a visitor remarked, »he coo Id now understand the true meaning of a "Friendly Society," after having been invited.to spend an evening with the company present.
After spending a really good time, the company dispersed soon after midnight.
