In the House of Commons,, Mr John Burns explained that pending a report from the Royal Commission on Poor Laws the Government proposed to grant two hundred thousand pounds to assist in the working of the Unemployed Act, which with rate-aided money and voluntary contributions would be sufficient to tide over the winter. It was intended to legislate and piovide rural housing in England and Wales on the lines of the Laborers Bill operating in Ireland, also a scheme of j afforestation on ten thousand acres of Crown lands. They would also try and prevent dockers and casuals burdening Westham, Poplar and East London. Mr Burns strongly warned the Trades Unionß not to consider relief works as a desirable permanent feature in social organisations.
