THE UPPER MOUTERE HOTEL.
Extensive additions have been made to the Upper Moutere Hotel and to celebrate their completion a banquet was held on Thursday evening, at whicb were present a number of the leading residents of the district and several visitors from Nelson. After ample justice had] been done to an excellent repast provided by Mr. and Mrs Ingram, several toasts-wore hOhdred; including "The King and the Empire," proposed by Mr J. A. Harley, and supported by Mr J. D. Beuke; " Success to the District," by Mr T. G. Brougham, and responded to by Messrs Drogemuller, senr., and F. Bensemann; "The Builders," by Mr T. Gorman, responded to by Mr A. IW. Clayden (Scott's Estate); "The Visitors," by Mr George Cook, responded to by Mr J. A. Harley; and "The Host and Hostess," by Mr T. Newman, and responded to by Mr Ingram. Between the speeches songs were sung by Messrs A. Bensemann, J. Satherley, T. Newman, J. Barham, and others. Appreciation of the kindness of Mr J. A. Harley and Mr Ingram in inviting those present to accept their hospitality was expressed on all sides, and a very pleasant time, was spent, the visitors leaving again for Nelson about nine o'clock in the evening. The old portion of the hotel has been demolished, and an addition of nine rooms, including a large* kitchen and bathroom erected in its' stead. The private entrance includes a hall, 22 feet in length, with a width of eight feet, adjoining which is a parlor 14 feet by 10 feet 6' inches, for the convenience of coach 'passengers. Alongside the bar is another parlor 14 feet 6 inches by 12 feet, and both rooms are comfortably furnished. The bar is 15 feet by 14 feet 6 inches, with circular counter, adjoining which is the public entrance and hall, 60 feet in length by eight feet. Both entrances are fitted with glass doros and sidelights. Upstairs are five large bedrooms and bathroom, the bedrooms being well and comfortably furnished. Scott's Estate were the -contractors for the 'building, and have carried out their work in a manner that reflects credit on the firm.
