WAIRARAPA THURSDAY REPS. V. NELSON.
I Very little interest was taken in : the representative match Wairarape I Thursday Union versus Nelson, j played at the Park on Septembei 5 6tb. and the attendance of spec- , tato'rs was small. The local combil nation was weak, about seven oi the original selection being unable j to play, nevertheless they scored s 3 win by the narrow margin of 22 t points to 19. In the first spell Nel 1 son had all the best of the play, put ting up sixteen poms to three. The 3 forwards secured the ball from the scrum time after time, and the passing rushes of the backs completely * demoralised the visitors, whose j tackling was of very poor order. It the second half the visitors altered h the formation of their scrum, Smith a replacing Harding in the front rank, B and this had the effect of preventing B the local "hookers" from getting 3 the ball, and the result was thai Wairarapa made a much better show--3 ing. In fact, for the greater portion of the spell they had Nelson oc f- the defence. In the first spell tries were scored for Nelson by Christie . (2), Spear, and McCabe, and al] ■ were the outcome of splendid pass- ■ ing rushes amoug the backs, in the - first two instances the ball travelling 3 through the hands of every one oi a the backs. Two of the scores were i converted by S. Pike. Lawrence f was penalised for being offside, and ■ O'Connor kicked a goal. In the b second spell Nelson were kept busily b engaged defending their line, and r the visitors put up sixteen points to b the local team's six. A Ross scored » two tries and King one, O'Connor 7 placing two nice goals. Davies also f kicked a penalty goal, but failed" at » an attempt from a mark within easy 3 range, The local backs generally - gave a good display, playing with 3 good combination. The forwards • in the first spell did well, both on s the line out and in the scrum, while 3 the front rankers easily beat thnii b opponents. In the second spell, b however, they did not do so well, ' the visitors frequently beating them 3 in the loose, and spoiling their work 7 in the scrum. Glover, McCabe, and 3 Comes were the pick of the scrums mers. None of the visiting backs - displayed good form, although oc- > casionally they gave a taste of their » quality in Kicking and running. b Their passing does not call for menb tion, and their tackling was weak. s Jackson, O'Connor, and Smith were - the pick of the backs, McMinn oc--3 casionaliy showing up. King played i a splendid forward game, and wae i ably supported by A. Koss, Dawes, and Smith. Mr Chisholm refereed, 7 giving every satisfaction, and Messrs 3 O'Connor and Calder acted as touch 7 judges.
