GOLDEN BAY. V. NELSON.

. —'— . f On Friday (Sepfc Ist) a' team frortf c Nelson journeyed to TaHaka to play j the annual fixture with the repre- i sentative* of the Golden Bay Rugby j Union. On arriving at^Waitapu the £ visitors were met by officials of_ the r local Union, and driven to* the Tel - j raph Hotel, where the team Was ac- , conmodated. The match was played : on Satufay afternoon in fine weather, and in tbe presence o* a large numbef tff spectators, Nefsdn being defeated by three points to tern, in the first spell the local team bad the advantage, and,/. Haase potted a goal. In the second half Bartlett and Sparrow scored from forward rushes, but the attempts at goal, were futile. Nelson then rallied, and McKegney scored a t*y from a forward rush. A good attempt at goal from a difficult angle was matfe by F*. N; Jones. From this out the visitors pressed the local team, but were unable to break their defence. The game, which was donfined principally to the forward division/ was fairly fast. Although the Nelson front-rankers secured the ball from the* scrum, tbe backs failed to respond,- and the 1 result was that the heavy forwards of the Bay team ran > through the visitors' .vanguard and shone in the loose). They were alstt superior on the line out. For, the local backs, J. Haase and Reilly were about the best, and Srarrdw and E. Moore were perhaps the pick of an even set of forwards. Stapp and Park were the best of the Nel son backs, but neither Spear nor Shrimpon played up to their usual form. McKegney, McGee, and Lanrence were prominent in the forWords. Neither team was up to its full strengh, and the visiting team" only had five repreentatiyea men. Nevertheless, every credit is due to the Golden Bay team for its win. In the evening, the teams dirted together at the Junction Hotel, and at a smoke concert held afterwards, the 1 President of the Golden Bay Union, Mr J. Reilly, in the chair, a jolly evening was spent with toasts,^harmony, etc., the gathering concluding at 11 o'iclock. Among the toasts honored were "The. Neljson Rugby Union," proposed by Dr Adams, responded to by Mr F. McGee, ; "The Golden |Bay Rugby Union," Mr F. McCabe—Mr J. Reilly; "The Visiting Team," Mr E. Moore—Mr H. Spear ;" The Golden Bay Team," Mr H. Spear—Mr E. Moore; "The Referees," Mr Shrimpton—Mr J.Moore, and other officials; "The President G.8.R.U., " Mr F. McGee—Mr J.
