The Harbor Works.— The Harbor » i Board dredge was towed over to the •j Boulder Bank yesterday by the 1 ; Wairoaj in preparation for commenc- • ing actual work. — The monthly J meeting of the Harbor Board will be 1 held at the Council Chamber on j Saturday afternoon next. ~| . ATHtETic.-^ At th6 Waimangaroa I sports (Wesfcport) on New Year's Day JD-. S. Thomson, of Nelson, won the i!100 yards championship. The day e ! following he was t awarded the 100 1 yards championship at Nagakawau i • feports. There were no other competitors for this event, as they were a apparently " not taking any" of our local sprinter. Thompson won his . heat in the 120 yards Sheffield, but only reached third place in the semifinal', Woods-Williamson Dramatic Coy. — Playgoes will be pleased to learn that the Woods Williamson Company 5 play a season of four nights in Nel- - son, opening on Monday next with "The Christian," a highly successful dramatisation by Miss Maild Williamson of Hall Oaines famous work. "The New Magdalene" will be presented on Tuesday, "In Old Madrid" . dh Wednesday, and Hall Caine's J masterpiece, *' The Manxman," * T dramatised under the title of "A t. Woman's Sin," on Thursday. The i0 box plan is now, open at Jackson's, 0 where seats may be reserved and day a sales obtained. 1 Nelson Asylum. — The -annual dis2. tribution of gifts from the Christmas y tree for the inmstea took place on Tuesday evening. The public had responded very liberally to the request of Miss Tibbie, the Matron, for - subscriptions, and the tree was a perfect picture, being loaded with I articles to meet the. tastes of all. > 4 Dancing commenced at 7. 30, at which time there was a good number of visitors, considering the doubtful state of the weather. Recitations were given by Mr C. Barltrop, and songs by Mrs C. Barttrop and Mr Shepherd, which were much appreciated. The tree was stripped at nine o'clock, when the gifts were distrii. buted to the patients, and it was very gratifying to those present to see the pleasure it afforded the patients when the articles selected for them were given round. Mr Morrison heartily thanked those present and absent who had kindly assisted by their gifts in contributing to the pleasure gof the inmates. "God Save the ■d King" was sung, and all retired, being in every way satisfied with the evening's entertainment. — A social 5S for the attendants and their friends was held last evening, when about 80 persons thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Several songs were given and a most comical recitation. Dancing was continued with great spirit until nearly one o'clock. A most enticing supper was provided and justice was ' done to it. Mr Morrison, the Suparintendenfe, appeared to be loosing after the comfort of all, and seeing that nothing was wanting. At the finish "Auld Lang Syne" and "God Save the King" was sung, and all went quietly to their homes thoroughly satisfied with the evening's enjoyment. Such a gathering must be regarded as a step in the right direction, providing some slight encouragement to the hardest worked and worse paid servants in the Government service, and it is to be hoped that more enjoyment will be aflorded to the staff in the future. A Beautiful Butterfly.— Mr R. 1. Kingsley informs us that yesterday morning Ire observec flying in his garden a very fine specimen of the very large and beautiful butterfly "Anosia Erippus." He states that he will be very glad to learn if any other specimens have been seen this year. The insect has an expansion s of wings of between three and four T inches. The wings are a riah orange e brown, bordered and veined in black with two marginal rows of vrhii spots. Male and female are nearly alike in color. A chitinous spot on vein 2 of the hind wing distinguishes - the male. As the usual time for the Anosia to make its appearance in its native home(United States) is March or April, Mr Kingsley says he presumes that the one he saw is a hibernating specimen, and if it finds a suitable food plant and deposits eggs (the new brood taking about 36 days from the egg to the imago insect), we may look for others about the beginning of March. The last " time he saw this beautiful insect was in 1896. "The Huia. " — We have received through Messrs J. E. Hounsell & Co. a copy of a New Zealand annual published under the tifcle of "The Huia." In a "foreword," the editor states that the publication was started "as an experiment with the intention of bringing into focus the literary talent which ia scattered throughout New Zealand," and it is claimed "to give some small encouragement to that struggling literary class which is striving to give a permanent expression to the life, interests, and ideals of their country without deserting their shores." The idea is a good one, and, published at the low price of sixpence, the annual should have a ready sale. Lucas's Nelson Almanac. —We have received from the publishers a copy of "Lucas's Nelson Almanac ond Year Book" for 1904." The National Bank. — Messrs Hislop and Walden, architects, in this issue, invite tenders for tne erection of new premises for the National Bank of .New Zealand, Limited. Tenders close on the 30th inst. Messrs Bisley Bros. & Co. report the sale of cottage property off Alton streetto Mrs Amey. Review of Reviews.— ln the December number of the "Review of Reviews for Australasia," Dr. Fitchett and Mr Henry Stead have an explanation and an announcement, from which many will regret to learn, that Dr. Fitchett will no longer have connection with the "Review," Mr Henry Stead, son of the originator of the "Review," and who lias bought out $he Australian '

shareholders, having arrived in Melbourne to take charge of the pubjisation. The December number of bhe "Review" contains the "History of the Month" and an article entitled "Australia through English Spectacles." The Duke of Devonshire is fche subject of the character sketch, and there are the usual references to the reviews, while some of the books of the month are reviewed at length. A Personal. — The" Loriddh correspondent of the "New Zealand Times" states:— Mr Eld rid J. Hercus, M.A., of Dunedin, who has come to London to undergo a year's preparation for mission work in South America, arrived here on the 11th inst. In accepting his application td the " Regions Beyond". Missionary Union; Dr. H. Gratton Guinness invited .Mr Hercus to spend a preliminary year in London, studying ihe Spanish language, and acting on the staff of Harley House, Bow toad, an important missionary nmlege. The New Zealander already feels the wisddm of this decisioD, which gives opportunities of contact with representatives of half the countries of Europe in the college clas^-room, not to mention frequent interviews, with missionaries : and noted Christian j workers from Svery quarter! Mr Hercuß tells me that the four other men at his table at Harley House represent between them close on a dozen languages and countries. At present most of his spare time is occupied in gaining acquaintance with what he describes as "this great gloorny town." [Mr Hercus was, for many months, acting pastor of the Baptist Church in Nelson.] Fob good lusk and good judgment, buy a MoCormiok reaper and binde*.
