PENNY POSTAGE,
On April 23rd wo received from Sir J. G. Ward, the Postmaster General, the following telegram:— "Very pleased to be able to inform .tion made by me, the K'eaeral Government of Australia have to-day agreed to allow New Zealand letters to be admitted to the Commonwealth at the penny rate. This news, lam sure, will be received with satisfaction by you, as Australia was the only British country which so far had refused to agree to New Zealand's universal penny postage. — J. G. Ward." It will be regarded with gratification throughout the Colony that letters may now be sent to any part of Australia or Tasmania at tbe popular penny rate of postage, (and Sir Jesoph Ward is to be complimented on tbe successful issue of bis continued; efforts in this direction. Mr Graham, M.H.R., and Mr Baigent (the Mayor), and the Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce also received similar messages to the above. Mr Graham replied as follows : " I received with very great pleasure your wire stating that the Australian Commonwealth has to-day agreed to admit New Zealand letters at ■ the penny postage rate, thus making it universal throughout the British | dominions. I have handed your wire to the Press, and heartily congratulate you on the result obtained. ' '
