A Gale. — During the night a> northeasterty gale of unusual severity has been experienced, accompanied at times by heavy rain. New Zealand Contingents. — The last General Orders issued by the Defence Office contains amongst other information regarding the various New Zealand Contingents the following information respecting men well-known in Nelson :— Trooper B. P. Avery, Ist Contingent, transferred to i Imperial Military Railways ; Trooper A. Turnbull, 2nd Contingent, provisionally discharged to go to England; Trooper A, J. M. Bonar, 3rd Contingent, transferred to I Kitchener's Body Guard; Private J. Street, 6th Contingent, promoted to be LanceCorporal ; ;Private D. J. S, Burnes, 6th Contingent, to be Lance-Corporal. The ' Egmont Post ' reports :— A son of Mr J. G. Harkness, of Midhirst, had a narrow escape at the Beaconfield Road railway crossing a few days ago. The horse he was driving " took charge " and rushed headlong into the guard's van of a train that reached the crossing at the same time as the horse did. The shaft of the trap pierced the door of the von and broke off. The horse was thrown down, but was quickly on its feet again, and performed a feat of another kind by bolting. Sonewuow or other young Harkness managed to stop in the trap all the time, and finally pulled up the horse little the worse for the adventure. [Mr Harkness formerly resided at Richmond.] TnoopEK James Young, whose death is j reported from South Africa, is a son of the I Rev. R. Young, vicar of St. ITary's. Carte;--ton. The deepest sympathy is felt for the reverend gentleman's family. [The family formerly resided at Motueka.] The New Zealand Illustrated Magazine. — We have to acknowledge receipt of the current number of this magazine, which, as usual, contains a quantity of reading matter instructive and entertaining alike, also some very good illustrations. We must confess our surprise, however, at the inclusion of such rubbish as that contributed by " K. Allen " under the heading " From Picton to Nelson by Coach." We venture tbe opinion that the article appeared for the sake of the illustrations, but one might expect- the editor of a magazine of the quality of the ' New Zealand Illustrated ' to keep clear of articles without real merit to commend them, and offensive to a community. We have no fault to fine! with " K. Allen," who is welcome to her opinions about Nelson, but Nelsonians have a right to feel aggrieved at the management responsible for the inclusion of such of libel on the town and themselves in a magazine which claims to be representative of the -whole Colony. Sale at Bkightwateb. — Mr Wm. Lock will sell, at 2 p.m. to-day, on account of the Waimea County Council, 38 lots of timber, boat, &c, without reserve. It is estimated that the cost of the proposed electrical railway project initiated by Pahiatua residents will be £67,460 for plant, £105,000 for constructing the permanent way, making a total of £172,460, or, roughly speaking, £200,000 for the whole undertaking. The highest viaduct in the world has jnst been built across a gorge in the Shan Hills, in Upper Burmah. It used up 5,000 tons of steel and cost 700,000d01. .
