Two hundred and eleven suitable young men have volunteered for the Canterbury troop. Only 50 can be selected. Imperial Government Accepts New Zealand Nurses. Wellington, January 21. The Imperial Government has cabled accepting the services of the nurses who left Christohurch on Saturday by the Lincolnshire. They will be attached to the Army Medical Corps on arrival. . New Zealand Railway VolunteersA few days ago the railway men at Ashburton suggested that a contingent of skilled railway employe's should be sent to South Africa. Mr Ward communicated with the Cape authorities respecting the proposal, and a reply has been received that probably men would be required. The New Zealand Railway Department then issued a circular asking for the names of those willing to go, and a large number of applications for service have been received, but nothing further can be done until later ' information has been received from the Cape. Departure of Second Contingent. The Governor's Message and Reply* January 22. The Governor sent the following cable to the Hon. J. Chamberlain, Secretary of State for the Colonies: — "New Zealand second contingent sailed to-day for South Africa, very great loyalty and enthusiasm prevailed." The following reply was received : "Her Majesty's Government learns with much pleasure of the departure of the contingent, and the loyalty and enthusiasm shown by New Zealand." The Patriotic Fund. Wellington, January 12. The singing of "The Absent-Minded Beggar " by Wallace Browlow has added £40 to the Patriotic Fund, the amount thrown on the stage on various evenings. Dunedin, January 21. The Floral F§te in aid of the Patriotic Fund was a great success, and is estimated to yield £400. The Patriotic and " More Men Scheme-" Wanganui, January 22. The sum of £1700 for the equipment and transport of the Wanganui Special Contingent of 25 men, is now assured, and the fund will probably exceed £2000. Westport, January 21.
