News by the 'Frisco Mail.
Auckland, January 18. TheR.M:S. Maripoaa, from San Francisco arrived at 8 o'clock. She was detained in Honolulu for the fumigation of mails. Oeneral news by the San Francisco mail from American files is as follows : — The town of San Jacino, California, was wrecked by an earthquake on Christmas Day. The tremor was almost the severest since the Amerioan occupation of Southern California. The business part of the little town, consisting of a b'.ook of two storey brick buildings was completely ruined. Other towns were slightly . damaged. Several Indians in adobe houses were killed. New York barely escaped a severe financial panic owing to the drain of specie for foreign lands and the failure to produce it. The Exchange Trust Company guaranteed 12,560,000d01s to stay a panic, and the Clearing House lent 10,000,000d01s to the Stock Exchange, while the Government loaned 7,000,000d01s cash, and individual banks sent large sums.
