Opposition Campaign

StbattobiJ; May 11

Captain Russell, Leader of the Opposition, had a good reception last evening.- The town band played selections outside his hotel, and escorted him to the Town Hall, where he addressed a packed meeting, the Mayor presiding.

Captain Russell spoke for only an hour and forty minutes, being a good' deal put out by good humoured banter indulged in by a section of the audience. His speech was on the same lines as at Hawera. His remarks on the land settlement question were received with cheers and laughter. Captain Russell said the condition of the colony was no laughing matter, but he admitted that he had seen more smiling faces at Stratford than on the whole of the East Coast. A number of questions were asked. The Prohibition party in strong force pressed him closely on the liquor question, but expressed themselves dissatisfied with bis replies. He deolined to support prohibition directly, and opposed a majority vote.

At the close a vote of thanks on the motion of the chairman was carried unanimously, and the meeting broke up with cheers, counter-cheers, and groans.
