Sandbank Near French Pass.

Wellington, September 3. Mr Perham, of the Mines Department, who was despatched to make a survey of . the sandbank which Captain McLean, late of s.s. Penguin, discovered in the channel leading to the French Pass, has returned to Wellington. He has reported to the Marine Department that he found 15ft of water on the bank at low watar. The bank, he says, is not quite in the channel, but it is nevertheless a menace to shipping, and the authorities have decided to place a buoy at one end of it. Mr Webber, who has lived at the French Pass for 24 years, says he has known of the bank for years, but of late it has become much more extensive than it used to be.
